November 2023 –TOHF will co-host the November 9th launch of the Veterans with Disabilities Task Force at the Connecticut State Capitol.

2023 – TOHF’s very first Connecticut YAP-K9 Ambassadors, Jasmine Morris and Jordan Baldwin, graduated from UCONN. Jasmine will be pursuing her Masters of Social Work degree from UCONN with a specialty in animal assisted therapy. Jordan is furthering her education as a CPA.

2023 – TOHF very first Youth Ambassador, Molly Karlin of NY, graduated in May with her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine degree from Purdue University.

March 2023 – TOHF co-hosted Connecticut’s first live K9 Veterans Day Ceremony March 13th at the Connecticut State Capitol.

March 2023 – TOHF’s President served as the Official Dignitary Greeter at the Animals in War and Peace Medal of Bravery Ceremony, March 6th at the U. S Congress, Washington, DC.

2023 – TOHF expands its foot print with international national security canine consultation.

March 2022 – Tails of Hope Foundation’s K9ER Project’s advanced training for Police K9 and Military Working Dog Teams launched in March 2022 at the Bergen County Public Law and Safety Institute, northern New Jersey.

June 14 – Girl Scouts “Court of Awards” ceremony in Bergen County NJ for Caroline C. (gifted K9 Oxygen masks to national security K9s) and Kelly F. (built a Serenity Room for a disabled veteran and his service dog from “studs to stunning”) as part of Tails of Hope Foundation’s Youth Ambassador K9 Career Program (YAP-K9™).

April 20 – Trinity Church of Allendale, NJ continues their support of Tails of Hope Foundation with a very generous gift of $750. Thank you!

April 18 – Youth Ambassador K9 Career Program’s (YAP-K9) National Advisory Board meets and continues planning for October’s Sponsor-A-Police K9 training. The YAP-K9 Ambassadors will present TOHF’s award-winning Police Community Bridging Program each Ambassador will be partnered with a K9 Team.

April 16 – Tails of Hope hosted a K9ER Project National Security Leadership and Community Stakeholders meeting at Bogota Fabrication Works in NJ to present its new initiatives to interested community organizations.

March 21 – Youth Ambassador K9 Career Program Ambassadors Maura Herron (Graduating college in Dec 2021 with a Criminal Justice Degree) and Jordan Baldwin (entering her junior year of college in the fall, studying Animal Sciences). Both are advancing to leadership roles with Tails of Hope. Both joined us while they were in the 6th grade.

March 13 – Tails of Hope Foundation releases its annual K9 Veterans Day video tributes In Memory of Fallen Police and Military K9s. These solemn videos were created by Mary Kulakowski of Tails of Hope’s Executive Team.

March 3 – K9 “Adonis” celebrates his first anniversary of service with the Paterson NJ Police’s K9 Unit. Adonis was gifted by Tails of Hope Foundation.

Feb 26 – Youth Ambassador K9 Career Program leader and criminal justice student, Maura Herron, meets virtually with LTC Vargus and Commander Corrigan. Maura is serving in a YAP-K9 leadership role and will provide executive support to the LTC and Commander.

February 10 – K9 “Liberty”, our service dog in training, gets new shoes. Thank you to her supporters Johnstone Supply Company of NJ, Colonial Rottweiler Club, Veteran Brandon and Jackie Oliveti.

February 1 – Paterson NJ Police SGT Ryan Curving retires. Tails of Hope honors his years of dedicated selfless service. We welcome PO Klein with K9 “Monty” as our new point-of-contact for the Paterson NJ Police K9 Unit.

February – TOHF’s President serves on Animals in War and Peace Medal of Bravery Award’s Advisory Board.

2021

December 29 – Tails of Hope continues to honor K9 “Mattie” with new educational fliers created to accompany tours of the K9 Mattie Memorial at the Connecticut Fire Academy in Windsor Locks, CT. In 2018 TOHF memorialized Connecticut State Police’s historic Accelerant Detection Canine (ADC) Program with a bronze statue honoring K9 “Mattie” and a Police Community Bridging Program’s YAP-K9 youth authored book entitled, K9 Mattie’s Legacy. K9 Mattie was the first forensically validated ADC K9 in CT and possibly the world.

December 23 – Colonial Rottweiler Club donates $500 for sponsorship of Tails of Hope Foundation’s current service dog in training, K9 “Liberty”.

December 5 – Veteran Max Speizer, Navy Korean War Veteran, USS Ingraham Association member and Grandfather to our Eagle Scout Achiever, Zach Speizer, sadly passes. Veteran Speizer’s family selects Tails of Hope to be a recipient of their memorial gifts. We send our deepest condolences to the Speizer family. Veteran Speizer you were special to all. Rest in peace.

December – K9 “Johnstone” reports to his new duty station serving a Connecticut Veteran named Trina who was severely injured while deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

November 17 – Little eight pound rescued Shih Tzu, “Goldi”, passes away at 21 ½ years old. Goldi served for nearly two decades, comforting and educating other rescued dogs and preparing them to become working K9s, including Tails of Hope Foundation’s K9 Ambassador “Casey”, who went from being feral to serving as a Certified Therapy Dog since 2013.

November 12 – Tails of Hope Foundation’s National Security K9 Advisory Board Committee progresses on National K9 Training Project for a planned launch in June 2021.

November – Service dog, K9 Johnstone, saves three lives and will be moving to a new duty station. He has been sponsored by Johnstone Supply Company of NJ and Tails of Hope Foundation.

October 2 – In Memory of Bright & Beautiful Certified Therapy Dog, “Teddy” Brent, who served Tails of Hope Foundation tirelessly for many years. Teddy comforted young and old, humans and animals alike until the last few days of his life. Teddy was a gentle and loving soul. We will miss you forever. Thank you for your tireless and selfless service.

October 6 – K9 beds purchased and shipped to Military Working Dogs deployed in South Korea thanks to Tails of Hope Foundation, Park Ridge Animal Hospital and Support Our 4 Legged Soldiers.

September 25 – Patterson NJ Police Officer Novar Vidal and K9 “Simpson” “seized 72 cocaine vials, nearly a half-ounce of cocaine, pot packaged in 38 baggies, four bags and 16 vials and a loaded .38-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun”. Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale said, “Vidal and Simpson are invaluable partners who have “removed dangerous weapons and illegal drugs from our streets. I am extremely proud of their abilities, synergy and hard work.” And so are we at Tails of Hope Foundation. K9 Simpson was a gift from Tails of Hope Foundation to the Paterson Police’s K9 Unit in 2018. Simpson is named In Memory of our friend and fallen Veteran TSgt David Simpson.

September 21 – Inaugural meeting of Tails of Hope Foundation’s National Security K9 Advisory Board Committee addressing growing domestic and international threats.

September – The training of Service Dog, K9 “Liberty”, continues as she celebrates her first birthday.

August – NYPD Counterterrorism Bureau K9 Commander, Brian J. Corrigan, retires after 35 dedicated years of selfless service and joins Tails of Hope’s Team as Project Manager.

August – A disabled Veteran’s Service Dog, “Delilah”, continues to be sponsored by Tails of Hope Foundation for ongoing and successful surgery removing her reoccurring mast cell tumors.

July – LTC Richard A. Vargus officially becomes Tails of Hope’s Advisor and Military Liaison.

June 26 – Rev. Michael Allen retires from Trinity Episcopal Church of Allendale, NJ. Thank you for your years of service, support for our disabled veterans and their service dogs, and for annually blessing America’s National Security K9s. May your blessings be returned to you!

June 11 – Service dog in training, K9 Liberty’s, spay is sponsored by Johnstone Supply Company of NJ with Tails of Hope Foundation.

June – Tails of Hope Foundation’s PPE campaign helps save the lives of 1,640 police K9 handlers.

May – Girl Scout Kelly of northern NJ achieves her Gold Award. Kelly built a serenity room for a disabled veteran and his service dog as her Tails of Hope Foundation Gold Project. We are so proud of you!

May – Girl Scout Caroline of northern NJ achieves her Gold Award with Tails of Hope Foundation. Her Gold Project involved gifting K9 oxygen masks to America’s National Security K9 teams including Animals in War and Peace’s inaugural Medal of Bravery recipient, FDNY K9 “Bucca”. We are so proud of you!

April – LTC Richard A. Vargus retires as Military Working Dog Department of Defense Program Manager at the Pentagon and increases his role with Tails of Hope Foundation on several national initiatives.

March 31 – Tails of Hope Foundation saves retired MWD “Gulliver’s” life with fast action when his spleen was on the verge of rupturing.

March 17 – K9 equipment gifted to the Paterson NJ Police K9 Unit by Tails of Hope Foundation.

March – As the COVID pandemic worsens and supply chains break down, Tails of Hope Foundation steps in to secure dog food needed by area police K9s.

March – An urgent PPE campaign is launched by Tails of Hope to support police K9 handlers.

March – Tails of Hope sets-up National Security K9 Advisory Board to assist in providing PPEs to police K9 handlers due to scarce supplies and to track zoonotic diseases (i.e., human-to-animal / animal-to-human transmission), a possible cause of the COVID pandemic and its resulting impact.

February 18 – TOHF attends screening of To Be of Service. A film about veterans with PTSD and their service dogs, hosted by CT State Representative Robin Comey at the Connecticut State Capitol.

February – TOHF to gift another police dog to Paterson NJ Police K9 unit.

February 6 – TOHF’s Girl Scout Gold Award candidate, Caroline, is recognized by her hometown’s leaders for her K9 oxygen mask project which is expanding nationally. Local police praise Caroline for an outstanding job. Congratulations Caroline!

February 3 – TOHF receives a The Home Depot Foundation grant of $3,500 for Girl Scout Gold Award candidate, Kelly. Her serenity room project helped a disabled NJ veteran and his service dog. Thank You!

January – TOHF continues its year-long mission of shipping Military Working Dog (MWD) supplies to America’s troops deployed in Afghanistan, Cuba, Kuwait, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia. Thank you for your service and to our dedicated supporters who make these gifts possible!

January – TOHF is working on a new multidisciplinary interoperability K9 national security training program, headed by Dr. Richard Vargus (ret LTC) and international military working dog experts.

January – TOHF receives a Bergen County NJ Chief of Police donation of $500 – Thank You!

January – Tails of Hope Foundation provides a disabled Connectcut veteran with a service dog and helps with family emergencies.

January – TOHF’s and Faithful Friends Service Dog Foundation’s service dog, K9 “Johnstone”, makes a lifesaving discovery for a five year-old child of a disabled veteran.

January 23 – TOHF holds two conference calls with Dr. Vargus (retired LTC), Chief Roy and Lois Gross of SPCA, and Ramapo Rescue Dog Association about the K9 national security training program.

January 22 – Volunteers Paula Smith, owner of Your Event, and Barbara Ross, owner of Ross Communications, join TOHF in the planning of a private K9 Veterans Day event on March 13th in NY City with Meera Gandhi. Thank You!

January 16-23 – Animal Medical Center of NY accepts Tails of Hope’s request for oncology support for MWD K9 “Rocky”, but unfortunately after reviewing the results of the CAT scan informs TOHF that Rocky’s condition is untreatable and he is placed in hospice care in Illinois. TOHF serves in the sacred role of assisting with Rocky’s end-of-life care and final expenses. Our hearts are broken over the loss of America’s War Hero. RIP dear Rocky – brave warrior.

January 16 – TOHF secures funding from Gizmos Gifts, US War Dogs Association, and individual donors, for a critically needed CAT scan for MWD Hero K9 “Rocky” – Thank You!

January 14 – Animals In War and Peace Museum invites TOHF’s President, Linda Blick, to serve on its Advisory Board.

2019 in Review

  • December 31 — TOHF is proud to announce that we have gifted 34 Canine Operational First Aid Kits (COFAK) in 2019. Thank you COFAK supporters!
  • December 30 — TOHF receives Johnstone Supply Company of NJ’s new donation of $1,675 to assist with the training of new service dog puppy, K9 Liberty. Thank You!
  • December 18 – TOHF follows-up with Senator Blumenthal’s staff regarding initiatives to advance support for K9 national security teams.
  • December 26 – TOHF receives Trinity Church of Allendale NJ’s donation of $1,670!  Thank You!
  • December 12 – TOHF helps a disabled veteran’s service dog “Lilah”, with continuing care for mast cell tumors. TOHF and Animal Medical Center of NY work together to provide for her on-going treatment.
  • December 7 – TOHF and Johnstone Supply Company’s gifted service K9, Johnstone, celebrates his second birthday. Happy Birthday!
  • December 2 – TOHF’s Youth Ambassadors receive a TOHF sponsored lecture on “How to Write a White Paper” in preparation for their meeting with Meera Gandhi. Meera is so impressed with their work that she offers to host a K9 Veterans Day event at her historic home, formerly owned by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
  • November – December – TOHF’s annual Military Working Dog Holiday Deployment Drive continues with Park Ridge Animal Hospital and Support Our 4 Legged Soldiers.  Packages are sent all yearlong to America’s MWD teams deployed in Afghanistan, Cuba, Iraq, Kuwait, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia, with special packages and holiday cards sent in December.  Thank You MWD Supporters!
  • November/December –The German Shepherd Club of America publishes a cover story tribute in their magazine (The German Shepherd Dog Review Nov. – Dec. 2019, Volume 97, Number 11), written by TOHF president Linda Blick, about MWD Jofa; beloved combat partner of SSG Holley.
  • November 22 — Girl Scout Gold Award candidate, Caroline, secures relationship with Paw Print Oxygen for donations and discounts on future purchases of oxygen masks for K9s.  Thank You!
  • November 14 –TOHF attends the inaugural Animals in War and Peace Medal of Bravery Award ceremony sponsored by The National Marine Corp League and Angels Without Wings. This was held in the Gold Room of the Rayburn Congressional Office Building in Washington, DC.
    • TOHF serves as ceremony co-organizer and Parade Marshal of the K9 Honor Guard

    • Distinguished guests include Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal, Connecticut State Representative Jason Doucette and Manchester’s Mayor Jay Moran.
    • Service dog puppy, K9 “Liberty”, is formally revealed by CT Senator Blumenthal, Faithful Friends Service Dog Foundation, disabled CT Veteran Jake and TOHF. TOHF also gifts K9 Liberty’s service dog puppy “starter kit” sponsored by Johnstone Supply Company of NJ.
    • Following the event Senator Blumenthal invites TOHF’s president to meet with him on Capitol Hill.
    • State Representative Jason Doucette and Mayor Jay Moran pledge to work with TOHF and Faithful Friends Service Dog Foundation on eliminating local unlawful incidents of service dog discrimination.
  • November 8 – Ribbon cutting ceremony is held for CT veteran and K9 Johnstone’s fence gifted by TOHF and sponsor Johnstone Supply Company of NJ. Thank You!
  • November 7 – TOHF Girl Scout Gold Award candidate, Caroline, presents K9 oxygen masks to the Union County NJ Sheriff’s Office.
  • November 8 – TOHF supports a CT veteran discriminated against by a business owner who refused him access to a restaurant with his service dog. TOHF is leading an effort toward strengthening laws that support service dogs for the disabled.
  • November 1 -14 – TOHF assisted a livestream TV production company in Washington DC with information and resources about explosive detection K9s.
  • October 30 – TOHF, along with lead sponsors Zoetis and Park Ridge Animal Hospital, and individual sponsors and tristate area veterinary hospitals, gift 20 additional COFAKs to K9 teams of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority K9 Counterterrorism Division and US Police Canine Association Region 7.   • October 30 – TOHF is presented with a stunning gift of a Critical Response NYPD Command K9 Unit Counterterrorism Challenge Coin. We are humbled to receive it and will cherish it always. Thank You!
  • October 27 – TOHF president attends Faithful Friends Therapy Dog “All Handlers” meeting in Ellington CT
  • October 17 – TOHF was the guest of the Bergen County NJ Chiefs of Police Foundation. TOHF spoke about its mission and showcased the Canine Operational First Aid Kits (COFAK).  TOHF thanked the Foundation for their ongoing support.
  • October 6 – TOHF appears at Park Ridge Animal Hospital’s grand re-opening in Park Ridge NJ. We remain ever grateful for their ongoing support!
  • October 2 – TOHF arranges video production services donated by All Mobile Video of NY and NJ for the K9 Interoperability National Security Training. Thank You!
  • October – A fence is gifted by TOHF and sponsor Johnstone Supply Company of NJ and is installed at a disabled CT veteran’s home to protect his service dog. Our thanks to Cornerstone Fence & Ornamental Gate, LLC for their discount and help.
  • September – TOHF celebrates its 10th anniversary working with the New York National September 11th Memorial and Museum.
  • September – TOHF’s Girl Scout Gold Award candidate, Catherine, works on creating a public service announcement campaign on the proper etiquette for interacting with disabled veterans’ service dogs.
  • September – K9s In The Classroom’s (formerly YAP-K9) very first Youth Ambassador from 2011, Molly, enters Purdue University and is studying to become a veterinarian.
  • September – Two TOHF Youth Ambassador’s, Jasmine and Jordan, begin their freshmen year of college at the University of Connecticut on full scholarship in pre-veterinary medicine. Both began with TOHF’s K9s In The Classroom in 2012 while attending Jumoke Academy in Hartford CT as sixth graders and continued as seventh and eighth graders.
  • August 23 – TOHF and FFSDF meet with the Litchfield CT library’s Children’s Director to introduce the K9 R.E.A.D program.
  • August 21 – TOHF and FFSDF host a service dog conference at The Forman School in CT with Girl Scout Gold Award candidate Catherine, her mother Kathleen, disabled veterans from CT and NJ and service dog trainers. During the conference TOHF surprises a disabled CT veteran with a gift certificate for a new fence to protect his service dog, K9 Johnstone.  The fence is a gift from TOHF and Johnstone Supply Company of NJ.  The conference, the veteran and K9 Johnstone are featured in the Waterbury CT Republican-American
  • July 2 – K9 “Faith” passes away. Faith was the extraordinary service dog of Dr. Alice Quinn.  Faith saved Dr. Quinn’s life five times during her service.  Each time Dr. Quinn had a seizure (more than 5,000 times during K9 Faith’s service) Faith had to make a cognitive decision whether or not to call 9/11.  Faith never made a mistake!  Each of the five times Faith did call 9/11, Dr. Quinn ended-up in critical care.  TOHF assisted with Faith’s advanced veterinary care at Animal Medical Center of NY.  K9 Faith was a founding service dog K9 trainer with TOHF K9s In The Classroom program for seven years.  Dear sweet brilliant Faith, you will be remembered forever!
  • July – The Connecticut State Historical Society invites TOHF and the Connecticut State Police Accelerant Detection Canine Division to submit its “K9 Mattie” project to their permanent collection, including the TOHF K9’s in the Classroom student’s book: K9 Mattie’s Legacy.
  • July – TOHF and Faithful Friends Service Dog Foundation (FFSDF) team up to co-host the Connecticut K9 Veterans Day ceremony to be held in March of 2020.
  • June 28 – The Zimmermann Family and Johnstone Supply Company of NJ donate $10,280 in support of service dogs for disabled veterans. Thank You!
  • June 27 – Connecticut State Police retired K9 arson investigator, “Baxter”, passes. TOHF is instrumental in securing life-saving oncologic veterinary treatment from Animal Medical Center of Baxter’s rare tumor. The advanced veterinary care K9 Baxter received allowed him to enjoy an additional 1 ½ years of quality retirement with his beloved family.  K9 Baxter was also a founding police K9 trainer with the TOHF K9s In The Classroom program for seven years.  We will miss you dear sweet Baxter.
  • June 22 – TOHF hosts its fifth annual BBQ benefit for the Paterson Police K9 Unit at J&S Roadhouse in West Milford, NJ. Lakeland Bank and the Yevchak family gift additional Canine Operational First Aid Kits (COFAK).  “Thank you!”, to our supporters!
  • June 9 – TOHF attends Youth Ambassador Jasmine’s graduation with honors from The Ethel Walker School in Simsbury CT. Jasmine participated in the TOHF K9s In The Classroom program in 2012 while attending Jumoke Academy as a sixth grader and continued as a seventh and eighth grader.  She is now a mentor for other TOHF Youth Ambassadors and is pursuing a veterinary career.  Congratulations!
  • June 1 – TOHF and POSSE Partners continue the home makeover project for a NJ Veteran and his service dog, addressing the attic and garage. Thank You!

  • May 22 – TOHF supports an NJ veteran in preparation of, and through, his rotator cuff surgery with gifts of a chairlift, bathroom and household handicap accessories with thanks to The Bergen County NJ Chief of Police Foundation and Park Ridge NJ Rotary Club.  Special thanks to J&V Quality Construction for help with the installations.  Additional huge thanks to Jan Fence (and Joan Clifford) for the new protective fence gifted for the veteran’s service dog which was needed after a coyote breached the yard and menaced the K9.  TOHF visited the veteran and brought his family dinner on the night of his surgery.

  • April 23 – America’s distinguished MWD, “Jofa” (J151), passes. Jofa’s first combat partner was SGT Zainah Caye Creamer, the first female MWD handler killed in action in the history of America, while she served in Afghanistan on 12 January 2011.  Thankfully Jofa survived and was reassigned to SSG Matthew Holley.  Both retired and the two combat buddies and best friends bonded for life.  TOHF and Animal Medical Center of NY assisted Jofa in his retirement years with advanced veterinary care.  Thank you for your service brave warrior. You will never be forgotten.

  • March 30 –Zach Speizer achieves his Eagle Scout Award after completing his project for TOHF’s Police Community Bridging Project benefitting the Paterson NJ Police K9 Unit. Richard Vargas, CIV USARMY HQDA PMG (US) honors Zach at his award ceremony in NJ.  Congratulations Eagle Scout Zach!
  • March 30 – TOHF hosts a yearlong home makeover project with 60 volunteers and co-sponsor POSSE Partners to benefit a disabled NJ veteran and his service dog. Thank You POSSE Partners and volunteers!
  • March 25 – TOHF meets with the Litchfield-Morris Connecticut Rotary Club’s president and the Connecticut State Police (CSP) K9 trainer to discuss potential CSP mobile K9 command unit.
  • March 22 – TOHF assists Ramapo Rescue Dog Association of NJ with an Emergency K9 First Aid Training presented by Dr. Paul McNamara in association with the New York Canine Association.

Jofa served in the US Military his entire life, from a puppy until his retirement at the age of 10. He was deployed to Afghanistan with SGT Kaye Creamer who was mortally wounded in action in 2011. Jofa suffered minor injuries at that time, but returned to duty. He was reassigned to SSG Matthew Holley and served on hundreds of Presidential and Vice Presidential domestic and international security details.
