SAR Community Tribute and Memorial Gardens
The 9/11 SAR 10th Anniversary Tribute Committee is developing plans to create three Search & Rescue Canine Memorial Gardens in recognition of the heroic service of SAR teams at each of the 9/11 sites.
Three locations are under consideration: Metropolitan NY/NJ, The Pentagon, Washington, DC and Shanksville, PA.
Memorial bricks engraved with the names of each of the SAR Canine Teams will be presented in a special recognition ceremony during September of 2011, and later placed at their respective sites with additional solemn ceremonies.
Landscape Architect, Tavis Dockwiller, principal of the award-winning firm, Viridian Landscape Studio has been named SAR 9/11 Tribute and Memorial Garden Landscape Architectural Advisor.
Forging an Alliance with the National September 11 Memorial & Museum
Discussions are underway with the staff of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum to work together in four key areas.
Historic Registries of all known SAR canine and pet-assisted therapy teams linked to the 9/11 events (researched under the direction of Dr. Cindy Otto, UPenn, School of Veterinary Medicine, and Penny Sullivan, President, Ramapo Rescue Dog Association).
Oral History Project – providing personal narratives to be recorded by StoryCorps from the SAR teams who worked during 9/11.
Curators from the Museum have asked to review the materials lent for the exhibition for potential follow-up requests for their collecting efforts.
Collaborating on the development of artistic and education resources for schools, colleges and universities linked to both the human-canine teams and the larger societal questions of life after 9/11.
